Substantial Curated Literature, Arts and

Culture Across The Global Afrodiaspora

TIFFANIE DRAYTON'S NEW BOOK, Black American Refugee – Escaping the Narcissism of the American Dream, is an unapologetic and highly engaging assessment of life in the United States for most Afromericans and other 'people of color.' Putting aside the millenniums of African descendant people who have explored, migrated or were brought to the Americas in numerous waves long before and after the 400-plus year slave era, Drayton focuses on the 21st century socioeconomic and legal realities of life in the USA for the Afromerican-born and Afrodiaspora newcomers. The basic question she poses is what justifies staying in a nation where it is constantly affirmed that you are hated, unwanted, legally disregarded, and disrespected as a citizen — and human being. She presents her case about a racialized  and economic caste system that diminishes most Americans regardless of their own illusions or delusions about 'making it' or having 'made it' in America. Black American Refugee explains it all through honest and relatable lived experiences, from childhood to adulthood, after Drayton's coming to America life as a Trinidadian child. There is also a global perspective she touches on — related to her experience as a traveling journalist — while staying updated and looking back comparatively on life in America. Drayton lays out the many irrefutable details of the regular struggle to exist and succeed in a country deeply rooted in structures of systemic racism from birth to death — plus the annual serial killings by taxpayer-paid authorities sanctioned to equally protect, judge and police all Americans, including the people considered less than citizens. While reading Drayton's third book, one cannot avoid its context and obvious connection to the politicized debate over just the facts about America's racism history in schools. Perhaps Black American Refugee will also highlight the ongoing US discomfort in truth telling. It's an addictive and uncomfortable must-read book — distinguishing itself as an authentic and affirming assessment of a so called post-racial America that does not exist. Except in rhetoric, a false construct of race, and the poisoned aspirations of our “American dream.” Black American Refugee asserts that you have to leave or be asleep to fulfill the dream.
