Cordy Tindell Vivian's

Relevancy Beyond 2022

IN 1970, C. T. VIVIAN, a close colleague of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a member of his executive staff, sat down to take stock of the civil rights movement and the progress it had made. Just two years after King's assassination, his assessment of the civil rights and "Black Power" movements was that they failed, and that the blame was linked to the existence of myths about America. As statistics and social analysis can be use to validate or question all perceptions of progress, Vivian's 136-page book is highly essential reading for anyone alive and aware since the Obama presidency.

PROPHETIC AND STUNNING now as it was over 50 years ago, Vivian's critique and call to action is for a nation in dire need of justice, peace, truth and reparative action in this second decade of the 21st century — arguably in this era of a "Black Lives Matter" movement, in and beyond America.

THE OVERALL POINT of this 5-decade old assessment is that unless authentic acknowledgments and sustainable repairs are made — for past damages and ongoing systemic harms — even the most privileged or delusional will not be able to escape the nation's very real and present self-destruction still suffocating the widest ethnic diversity of Americans with less and lesser privilege. Lived experiences and hard data don't lie.

THE SIGNS AHEAD are large, and they become more illuminated by protests, elections, and voting rights activism — the primary tools of change in a democracy.  Seemingly symbolic, C. T. Vivian's book is bound only in durable hardcover. It is equal parts of a diary, handbook, sermon, and a solid warning rooted in clear-eyed readable analysis. DM    VIDEO►
